| From
the moment you arrive on the Mendes Ranch, the feeling of ohana (family) is abundant
and the views are astounding. A family owned and operated business, the original
Mendes traveled to the island of Maui from the Azores Island, Portugal in 1866.
The land where the ranch is now located was a homestead in the 1940's owned by
Manuel Mendes, otherwise known as "Red", and his only son Ernest Mendes. It
was rough during those times- no electricity, no running water, dirt roads over
rocky terrain. They stuck it out.... now, Ernest's son Allan J. Mendes, runs the
ranch which has grown to 3,000 acres, with 300 head of cattle and 50 horses. You'll
recognize Mendes ranch cattle by their EX brand! The
breathtaking trail ride across an actual working ranch will be a journey that
we will never be forgotten. Whether the family is at the rodeo arena practicing
their roping skills, or attending the annual Makawao rodeo, you can be assured
that the family will be together! |
